Research institutes should create ties with textile sector
October 16, 2009 (India)

Novelty or fancy items have shorter product life cycle. It is therefore essential that, before the cycle comes to an end; some new innovations should be made and delivered.

Indians, by nature are more creative than productive. Comparatively, in terms of textile productivity, China is far ahead of India. But in terms of innovation and designing that require emotional quotient, India rules.

Indian entrepreneurs might not be qualified research scholars. Their resources may be limited. Yet, practical creativity in their genes helps them to feed the vast needs of the Indian domestic market for fabric.

Despite the talent and demand, India lags behind western countries in terms of remarkable product development. R&D at the industry level is virtually non-existent because the industry hardly understands the long term value of product research.

Research institutes should contribute to create closer ties and connections with the textile and related industries with innovative products and solutions, which in turn will help the growth of the Indian Textile Industry.

In the just announced budget, the Union Government has waived off taxes on expenses incurred on R&D activities for all manufacturing units.

Textile industry should come forward and utilize this benefit but the initiation should come from the research institutes in India.
