Excellence Club to halt drift away from Aussie wool farming

Italian fabric maker Vitale Barberis led 23 other companies to set up the Wool Excellence Club, to halt the drift away from wool production in Australia. The club members have to meet strict conditions, i.e., their wool has to be from Saxon Merinos and have the right elasticity and density, while also ensuring that the wool is from farms that do not mule.
As a measure of encouragement, these European luxury fabric and suit makers will reward the very best Australian wool producers with premium and top prices for their wool.
“Aussie sheep numbers, especially those of the superfine variety, have dropped sharply from a high of 180 million in 1970 to about 70 million currently,” Australian media reported.
Most of the wool farmers have opted out due to changing demands, drop in profitability of wool and rise in output of other fibres. (AR)
