Late Dhirubhai Ambani, the founder chairman of Reliance Industries, has been chosen for this year's Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honour.

Ambani was chosen for his “exceptional and distinguished” service to trade and industry, the Home Ministry said. There are 10 Padma Vibhushan winners in a total of 112 Padma awardees announced by the government on the eve of Republic Day.

“The Padma Vibhushan awarded to Dhirubhai Ambani is an honour to the indomitable spirit of Indian entrepreneurship, innovation and ambition to always do better than the best in the world,” said Reliance Industries chairman and Dhirubhai's elder son Mukesh Ambani.

“For me and the 100,000-plus employees of Reliance family, it is a very proud day. We take this opportunity to rededicate ourselves to contribute to building a modern and self-reliant India in which all our citizens are assured equal opportunity to attain their fullest potential,” he added.

Dhirubhai Ambani established Reliance Industries in 1966 and contributed greatly to the company's meteoric rise. Today, the company is ranked among the world's top 500 companies in terms of the revenue it generates. (RKS)
