The Gujarat government is likely to abolish the 5 per cent value-added tax (VAT) on narrow fabrics manufactured in the state, mainly in the man-made fabric (MMF) hub of Surat, following a representation made by the industry association earlier this week, according to a media report.

The state government had announced 5 per cent VAT on narrow fabrics in the State Budget in February-2015. Surat and Ahmedabad are the two big centres for narrow fabrics which are used in apparel industries, orthopedical industries, electronic industries, car industries etc. (SH)
