The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) can be the forerunners in the promotion of handloom and handicrafts in the country by strategising policies and programmes related to the sector and conducting research and case studies, M Pariat, director in-charge of Meghalaya Handloom and Handicrafts Development Cooperation Limited (MHHDC), said in Shillong.

He was addressing an event, which was part of several curtain raiser events organised across north east India to generate awareness about the importance of the handloom industry and its contribution to socio-economic development ahead of the National Handloom Day on August 7, according to media reports.

Handloom and handicrafts cannot bring in economic development without a proper strategy, Pariat added. IIM Shillong director Amitabha De said handloom is part of the institute’s research areas.

The government in 2015 declared August 7 as National Handloom Day to mark Indian freedom struggle’s Swadeshi Movement, which began on August 7, 1905.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati highlighted the magic of weaving in Assam in a function, where various handloom products were displayed. Setting up of a yarn bank for weavers was announced at a function at Tezpur University in the state. (DS)
