Within days of scrapping the handloom, powerloom and handicraft boards, the ministry of textiles, Government of India has abolished the Cotton Advisory Board (CAB) and the Jute Advisory Board (JAB) with effect from August 10, 2020. The decisions are in consonance with the government's vision of "minimum government and maximum governance".

In two separate gazette notifications, the ministry highlighted a leaner government machinery and the need for systematic rationalisation of government bodies as the reason for abolishing the advisory bodies.

As a representative body of government agencies, growers, industry and trade, the CAB's role was to advise the government on matters pertaining to production, consumption and marketing of cotton, while also acting as a forum for liaison among the cotton textile mill industry, the cotton growers, the cotton trade and the government. The CAB was also tasked with drawing up the Cotton Balance Sheet.

The role of the JAB headed by secretary (textiles) was to advise the government on matters pertaining to jute falling within the purview of Jute and Jute Textiles Control Order-2000 including production estimates of jute and mesta.
