Indian textiles minister Smriti Irani has proposed setting up a handloom park for loin loom weaving in the capital region of Arunachal Pradesh to promote traditional loin looms. She conveyed this to state governor BD Mishra during a recent meeting in which the latter advocated promoting traditional Arunachal textiles at the national and global levels.

Each tribe in the state has a different colour and design, symbolising its identity and loin loom weaving has been a time-tested self-employment avenue for women, the governor said.

Mishra also urged Irani to start cotton and silk banks in the state so that weavers can easily collect their thread requirement, according to media reports. (DS)
