Karachi textile exporting units face gas shortage

Karachi’s textile units, contributing 52 per cent to Pakistan’s textile exports, are facing gas shortage, according to Jawed Bilwani, chairman of Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PHMA). The units are compelled to work six days a week for the last few years due to weekly one-day industrial gas holiday by the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), he said.

The frequent low gas pressure now has aggravated the situation, Bilwani said. Competing industries in the region remain operational round the year, according to Pakistani media reports.

Export production has been hurt badly as industries remained without gas for 4-13 hours during 14 days in December, he said.

Gas generators producing electricity are shutting down due to low gas pressure, causing faults in the machinery and electronic equipment and machinery programs get corrupt or damaged due to power fluctuation, he said.

Bilwani urged the government to direct SSGC to comply with government policies and supply gas to textile export industries on a priority basis. (DS)
