Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA) was very distressed with the report that DGS&D is continuing procurement of plastic bags for packing food grains and invited fresh tenders of around 38,636 bales of HDPE/PP woven sacks.

The jute industry had to seek involvement of Union Textile ministry regarding this matter.

Speaking to Fibre2fashion S K Bhattacharya, Executive Vice Chairman of IJMA said Government has already cancelled major part of the supply of synthetic bags. They have agreed to take 1 lakh bales of jute bags which are in process of supply. Traders of Punjab and Haryana use these bags packing wheat.

According to IJMA Deputy Chairman R K Poddar, the jute industry is capable of supplying the entire quantity as its capacity was over 1.5 lakh bales of BTwill jute bags per month.

The Vice Chairman also said that Government will be able to manage both plastic bags and jute bags. Answering to the question regarding loss because of strike, he said that IJMA have asked mills to work for extra time to compensate the loss and received good response.
