Cotton farmers in Jhole, Sanghar, Mirpurkhas and Tharparkhar in Sindh, and Sahiwal, Pak Pattan and Burewala in Punjab are worried due to virus attack in their plantains.

It is feared that around 35 percent crop will be destroyed if virus attack is not controlled in time and they would not be able to attain the set target for the 2007-08.

This year the Federal Government has fixed a target of 14.14 million bales cotton to be sowed on 8.031 million acres in the country, of which, around 6.326 million acres is to be in Punjab and 1.581 million acres in Sindh. NWFP and Balochistan will share the remaining 0.14 million area for cotton production.

Till now Punjab has completed 47 percent of cotton sowing target while in Sindh around 55 percent of the target is done.

Experts suggest that farmers should scatter standing weeds in the fields with effective weedicides, so that the pest does not survive on the tiny cotton plants.
