PTA lobbies for ban on wet blue leather export

To ensure adequate availability of raw inputs for country's leather industry, the Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has called upon the Government to impose total restriction on export of all types of wet blue leather which includes wet blue and split wet blue leather, pickled leather and raw hides and skins.
The Association members also unanimously resolved to take up the issue, more strongly with the concerned authorities to stop illegal exports of livestock from Pakistan, which too is one of the main reasons responsible for shortage of leather hides.
Further, the Association also intends to send strong recommendations to the Minister of Commerce, Member Customs, Secretary Commerce, Chief Executive, TDAP and other concerned authorities of Government to immediately issue a notification/SRO for imposing a ban on export of all types of wet blue leather.
These are the basic inputs which the leather industry requires to timely execute its export commitments, and thereby earn valuable foreign currency for the national treasury.
Leather export has continuously been waning since 2007-08. The sector's export which stood at US $1.22 billion in 2007-08, dropped by 29 percent to US $867 million in 2010-11, Agha Saiddain, Chairman Skin and Hide PTA informed.
He said that the Government needs to introduce stringent measures to curb illegal exports of country's livestock to Iran and Afghanistan through border routes, as the elements involved in this trade, are causing Pakistan to suffer huge financial losses.
Saiddain further said that scarcity of basic raw inputs – wet blue and short supply of skin and hide are compelling the producer-exporters in the country to deny or cancel export orders, thus causing the country to lose valuable foreign exchange.
Casings, skins and hides are the key by-products which bring considerable foreign exchange to the national exchequer, Saiddain said. However, he did add that, though leather industry serves as a source of livelihood for around 500,000 people in the country, but is on the wane due to government policies.
