Azerbaijan's cotton exports rise

Azerbaijan exported cotton worth US$ 2.416 million in May 2011, as against US$ 2.2 million previous month, showing a rise of 9.8 percent, according to the figures released by the Azerbaijan State Customs Committee (SCC).
However, the figures were less compared to the US$ 3.7 million achieved in March 2011.
During the five months period of Jan-May 2011, the country has exported cotton worth US$ 13.58 million.
Processed cotton fibre accounted for US$ 4.3 million during Jan-May period, as against US$ 2.245 million during the corresponding period last year, marking a year-on-year increase of 93.33 percent. In May this year, the country exported cotton fibre worth US$ 571,550 compared to US$ 206,370 in April and US$ 1.717 million in March.
In 2010, cotton accounted for 30.24 percent of Azerbaijan's 2009 export index, and earnings from its export declined by 78.5 percent.
Last year, 3,738.2 tons of cotton worth US$ 5.249 million was exported by Azerbaijan at an average price of US$ 703.33 per ton. This made up 0.02 percent of the country's total export of US$ 21.32 billion.
In 2009, Azerbaijan exported 17,371.6 tons of cotton worth US$ 17.358 million at an average price of US$ 999.25 a ton. Cotton export accounted for 119.27 percent of 2008 export indices and made up 0.12 percent of the country's total export that year.
However, the figures were less compared to the US$ 3.7 million achieved in March 2011.
