Minister for Manufacturing, Exports and Trade Richard Dalla-Riva met on July 21 with business leaders in the Textile, Clothing and Footwear (TCF) industry to discuss the Victorian Coalition government's support to establish a textile and fashion hub at the Kangan Institute.

Mr Dalla-Riva's roundtable meeting considered challenges to the future of the TCF industry and potential pathways to expanding employment and business opportunities in the industries.

"We strongly support a thriving and competitive TCF industry because we believe its future promises to be exciting,” Mr Dalla-Riva said.

“Following consultation with key stakeholders in the industry, the Victorian Government is supporting the establishment of a TCF precinct to help build collaboration, skills development and technology transfer within this important industry.

“The TCF precinct will build critical mass to enhance the retailing experience for shoppers, and create a vibrant and exciting environment that will attract skilled employees as well as international and domestic wholesalers.

“It will also provide the opportunity for new textile clothing and footwear promotional and tourism events, as well as links into existing events such as the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.

“The TCF sector and the general Victorian manufacturing sector will also benefit from the creative and technological advances being delivered by the non-woven, industrial, and technical textiles sector.

“The Victorian Government is determined to create a competitive environment for business and that is why we are reviewing state taxes and regulation, infrastructure quality, price competitiveness and Victoria's education and skills base.

“We have also commissioned the Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission to develop a strategy for the future of an internationally competitive and productive manufacturing sector,” Mr Dalla-Riva said.
