Japan imported 1,619,287 kilolitres (1,115,771 tonnes) of naphtha for the petrochemical sector in May 2011, compared to 1,776,324 kl (1,237,633 tonnes) in the same month last year, which is a decline of nearly 9 percent, as per the data released by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
The naptha import was also less in May compared to 1,809,718 kl (1,247,203 tonnes) in April this year. Accordingly, the cost of import in May was also less compared to that of April. While the imports cost US$ 1,132,898,318 in May, it cost US$ 1,178,956,785 in April.
However, there is gradual rise in the price at which naphtha was imported. The import price of naphtha was US$ 752.3/ton (48,740 yen/kl) in May 2010. This increased to US$ 945.3/ton (54,027 yen/kl) and US$ 1,015.4/ton (57,024 yen/kl) in April and May 2011 respectively.
