The average EMI of 1143¢ for the season was well above the previous highest of 1049¢ in 2002/03, when the market lifted after the disposal of the stockpile. However, the US exchange rate was around 58¢ that year; and the average value of the EMI in US currency was 613¢, 533¢ below this year's average of 1146¢.

The market reached exceptional levels in US currency, with the closing EMI in US currency (1513¢) up by 95.9% since the start of the season compared with a 59.8% increase in Australian currency. The previous market peak in US currency was around 945¢ in the late 1980's.

Skirtings were in good demand and did not experience the setbacks seen in the fleece wools. The lower VM and better type wools did very well. Looking at the 12 months, it was another good year for skirtings, with the only downside being the presence of significant amounts of very burry, cotted and coloured fleeces in the East in Autumn as a consequence of the over-abundant amounts of rain received in Spring and Summer.

It was a solid week for crossbreds with small non-significant gains in their average AWEX MPGs. Advice from New Zealand is that the crossbred market was very strong there this week, with increases of around 2%. The overall year was a very good one for crossbreds also. The rises in their Micron Price Guides were very good, although not quite matching those seen in the Merino wools. Although not in sufficient quantity to be quoted by AWEX, the trade reports that some very good prices were paid for good quality coarse crossbred wool (36 to 38 microns) during the season.

Oddments had a mixed week. The average AWEX Merino Cardings Price Guide was virtually unchanged after the strong gains of the previous three weeks. Oddments also featured strongly over the season, with the AWEX Merino Cardings Prices Guides at very high levels. Very good prices were paid for combing length oddments during the year, particularly for China.

Buyers for China were dominant with good buying support from Europe, India, Taiwan and Korea.

Sales will be held in Sydney and Melbourne next week in the first sale of the new season, when 39,987 bales are currently rostered for sale. The present estimate for the following sale (Week 02) is 40,955 bales; a decrease of 10.9% over the two sale period when compared with last year.

Sales are in recess in South Africa until 17 August.
