An Australian delegation currently on a visit to Fiji said that newer reforms need to be introduced in the Textile, Clothing and Footwear (TCF) sector of Fiji to widen its scope and to boost its competitiveness.

The delegation has come to study and collect information in view of the impending year-end renewal of South Pacific Regional Trade and Economic Co-operation Agreement (SPARTECA) TCF-Scheme between Australia and Fiji.

The delegation expressed satisfaction at the level of dedication of Fiji's industries to enhance production and efficiency as well as in supporting innovation.

Nonetheless, both the countries felt that the TCF sector could be further developed through Australia and Fiji's prolonged affiliation under the SPARTECA TCF-Scheme.

The TCF industry in Fiji is vital for reducing poverty and stimulating social equality as 90 percent of the 4,000 direct and 16,000 indirect workers in the industry are women, who, in most cases, are the sole support for their families.
