Swaziland encouraging SME linkages to boost economy

Swaziland's Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade is encouraging small and medium enterprise (SME) linkages as one of the measures to boost the economy.

The linkage programme initiated in 2010, helps big investors to get in touch with local suppliers. Such linkages are facilitated by the Swaziland Investment Promotion Authority (SIPA).

Last year, SIPA was able to link over 30 local SMEs with multinational corporations under the programme, resulting in generation of employment to several Swazis.

The linkage programme ensures that Swazi companies are benefited through partnering with multinational corporations, in terms of trading as well as transfer of technology.

Meanwhile, SIPA has announced that it is still in talks with many multinational corporations and is asking them to consider partnering with Swazi SMEs.

The Ministry is supporting the linkage programme and wants to ensure that each and every sector gets represented in it, especially manufacturing and agriculture. SIPA had recently asked the Swaziland Cotton Board to ensure that the inputs needed in the textile industry are manufactured within the country, as ginning facilities are also available.
