Fateni Etem, the Consul General of Turkey, has promised the business community of Pakistan that he would brief his Government regarding concerns of Pakistani exporters over levy of additional 18 percent customs duty on denim fabric imports from Pakistan.

Interacting with members of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) before returning home on the completion of his term, Mr. Etem stated that over the past three years the mutual trade between the two countries has soared from US$ 600 million to $1 billion.

Expecting the positive trend to continue, he said that the mutual trade between both the countries is likely to surpass two billion US dollar mark in near future.

Mohammad Saeed Shafiq, President of KCCI raised the issue of Turkey's move of subjecting denim fabric imports from Pakistan to an additional 18 percent customs duty, taking the total duty imposition to 24.5 percent. The new levy would become effective from July 24, 2011 onwards.

He said that this move would badly hit the Pakistani exporters, while the country is already under anguish due to reasons like war against terror and rising problem of unemployment.

Mr. Shafiq asked the Turkish Consul General to appraise his Government regarding the concerns of the Pakistani exporters over the levy of additional duty and urge it to find an early solution to the same.
