Job loses mount in Spanish textiles industry

Spanish textiles industry is reeling under the dual impact of the restructuring process that began in 2005 and the 2008 economic crisis. The restructuring exercise included liberalization in imports and exports of textiles.

The Labour Force Survey (LFS) carried out by the Textile and Apparel Centre revealed that there has been a sharp decline of 16,000 jobs in 2010, bringing the number of workers in the industry down to 117,300, i.e. a drop of nearly 12 percent compared to 2009.

During the last five years, the Spanish textiles sector made up of nearly 18,000 companies has lost 29.3 percent of its business. While the loss in terms of production was 35.8 percent, there was a 38 percent reduction in the number of people under social security.

Experts at the Spanish Interrextile Council (CIE), the UGT and CCOO, say that the trend of loss of jobs in manufacturing activity is likely to continue as it is difficult to predict how long the general crisis will continue. Also, it is not yet known whether the restructuring process is complete or will continue further.

One interesting finding of the LFS analysis is the increase in women workforce. The survey revealed that 54 percent of jobs, particularly in the garment sector, are occupied by women.
