Textile & clothing sector to gain from India-EU FTA

It is expected that the fruition of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations underway with the 27-member European Union, will benefit the Indian textile and apparel sector the most.

A delegation from the European Union is in India to continue the final leg of negotiations, which have been struck due to major differences between both sides.

The original deadline for signing the deal, negotiations for which began in June 2007, was set for April this year.

The EU has raised several non-tariff barriers on imports of textiles and clothing from India like - labeling certification, registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemical substances.

The Indian negotiators have time and again conveyed their concerns over imposing these barriers.

If the EU addresses these concerns, it could prove to be a bonanza for Indian textile and clothing exports to the EU.
