Azerbaijan exported cotton worth US$ 1.17 million in June 2011, registering a decrease of 51.4 percent compared to its exports of US$ 2.416 million in May, according to the figures released by the Azerbaijan State Customs Committee.

However, the country's exports witnessed a substantial 78.3 percent growth to US$ 14.758 million during the first six months of the current year over the country's exports during the corresponding period in 2010. This was mainly due to exports touching a month's high of US$ 3.7 million in March this year. The cotton exports in April stood at US$ 2.2 million.

The export of purified cotton fibre during the January-June period also grew by 93.42 percent to US$ 4.34 million, as against its exports of US$ 2.245 million during the corresponding period of 2010.

In 2010, Azerbaijan exported 3,738.2 tons of cotton that accounted for 30.24 percent of the previous year's export index. The earnings from cotton exports too, declined by 78.5 percent. Cotton exports contributed a mere 0.02 percent or US$ 5.249 million to the country's total exports of US$ 21.32 billion.

The export price for cotton in 2010 averaged to US$ 703.33 per ton, while in 2009, the price averaged US$ 999.25 a ton.

In 2009, Azerbaijan exported 17,371.6 tons of cotton valued at US$ 17.358 million, which accounted for 119.27 percent of production export indices over 2008, and 0.12 percent of the country's total export.
