Pursuant to a deal cracked between the government, management and majority union, Howrah based Kanoria jute mill is to resume its operations from August 22 after a gap of five years.
West Bengal Labour Minister Purnendu Bose stated that the mill would recommence production activities from September 10, prior to which all the workers would have to resume their duties.
The mill has remained closed since March 20, 2006 owing to labour unrest and union-management conflict. At that time, the mill employed about 1,500 workers.
S.S. Pasari, who inked the deal on behalf of mill management, said that he looked forward to receiving co-operation from workers.
While the Trinamul labour union, Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC), inked the tripartite deal, three other trade unions namely Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) and Forward Bloc's Trade Union's Coordination Centre (TUCC) said they will sign the agreement after studying it thoroughly.
However, the representatives of these three unions have also welcomed the decision regarding restarting the mill.
