Textile workers to strike if minimum wage not implemented

Comrade Issa Aremu, General Secretary of the National Union of Textile Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria (NUTGTWN), has said that the workers would go on strike since August, if the provincial governments fail to keep their promise of implementing the new minimum wage of N18,000.

Com. Aremu said it was disappointing that in the course of negotiations some of the State Governors showed their reluctance to pay minimum wages.

He cited the new Minimum Wage Act as one of the decisive issues concerning labour market that the Union has just resolved. He added that it showed an exit from the old view that it would not be possible to pay minimum wages unless subsidy on petroleum is abolished.

Implementation of the new wage structure would enable workers to be financially more secure, which would thereby enhance their productivity and purchasing power, he added.

As specified in the agreement, the Federal Government needs to adhere to the New National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2011 and needs to close the negotiations with labourers regarding implementation of the same, latest by July 31, 2011.
