Delay likely in resumption of Formosa's No.1 naphtha cracker

The No.1 naphtha cracker owned by Taiwan's Formosa Petrochemical Corp is likely to face delay in resumption as a power transmission network at the company's plant complex was damaged by a fire.

The No.1 cracker having a capacity of 700,000 tonnes per year (tpy) was shut after a fire in a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) pipeline on May 12 this year, and was scheduled to restart in first-half of August.

Formosa is Asia's leading naptha buyer, and had earlier announced that it would restart the No.1 unit before closing its No. 3 plant for maintenance. But, following the latest fire incident, the company is unsure about the restart of No.1 plant as investigations are still going on.

However, Formosa has now announced that it would go ahead with its planned maintenance of No.3 naphtha cracker even if No.1 plant does not restart by then.
