The state-run National Textile Corporation Ltd (NTC) is ready to make its debut in processing industry as its Rs. 2.5 billion facility coming up in Karnataka's Hassan is expected to become operational soon, K Ramachandran Pillai, Chairman and Managing Director of the company, has revealed.

NTC Chairman said that the facility, spread on a plot of 40 acres, incorporates 40,000 spindles and 48 shuttle-less looms for weaving, thus housing a capacity to process 40,000 metres of fabrics each day.

He further stated that processing activity stipulates cautious handling, especially with respect to observance of rules regarding pollution. Hence, he added, NTC is carrying out negotiations with leading Italian and German firms for procuring the necessary high-tech machinery for foraying into the field of processing.

Though NTC too, just like other businesses in the sector, was hit by the declining trend in the spinning sector, it aims to widen its business with addition of 120,000 spindles by March 2012 to its already existing overall capacity of 720,000 spindles, Mr. Pillai said. He added that the Corporation further plans to enhance the number of spindles to 1.2 million by 2012-13.

He further revealed that the Corporation has resolved to foray into the field of technical textiles and is planning to establish a cluster in the sector. For the purpose, NTC has already identified some locations including a 135-acre plot in Kanpur, and huge lands in Maharashtra's Vidarbha region and also in Coimbatore.

He stated that the Corporation was in the process of finalizing the modalities for establishing the technical textile cluster with private partnership. The cluster will have at least 10 projects involving a combined cost of Rs. 2.5 billion. While NTC would further infrastructural facilities for the cluster like land and building, selection of the site would be done as per the choice of private players, he added.

The Corporation has already resolved to establish a Geotech unit at Rajasthan's Beawar at a cost of Rs. 2.5 billion and a Rs. 600 million medical textile project in Coimbatore.

The Corporation registered a sales turnover of Rs. 6.75 billion during fiscal 2010-11.

Mr. Pillai further stated that NTC exported yarn and home textiles worth Rs. 60 million last year, and the same are projected to grow to Rs. 250 million this year.
