Centre to help silk reelers, as silk prices drop

Following a substantial fall in the raw silk and cocoon prices, the Centre has announced that it would organise a meeting of the Chief Secretaries of the southern States to work out a plan to safeguard the interests of the silk reelers and farmers.

Commerce and Industry Minister, Anand Sharma, who currently holds the additional charge as Textiles Minister, had a meeting with Karnataka Labour and Sericulture Minister BN Bache Gowda and other stakeholders from the silk industry.

The Textiles Minister said that the representatives of the silk industry have asked the Centre to fix Minimum Support Price for silk and also to take steps to enhance the quality of cocoon.

The Minister said that the matter would be discussed with the concerned State governments.

Cocoon and raw silk prices have been declining over past few months. While the cocoon prices have dropped from around Rs. 350 per kg in February this year to over Rs. 100 at present, raw silk prices too have witnessed a sharp fall from Rs. 2,800 per kg to below Rs. 1,500 per kg now.

Karnataka accounts for around 50 percent of the silk produced in the country.

To enhance the quality of cocoon, the Minister said that a research window would be established for the purpose. He added that the Central Silk Board would seek assistance from various research institutions.

He further stated that the farmers have been asked to consider growing other non-mulberry cocoons as an alternative option.
