Sabah's craftsmen should manufacture products that are more consumer-friendly by applying creativity, Zulkhairi Ismail, Chief Administrator of Sabah Foundation Southern Interior Zone has said.

Addressing a three-day handicraft training programme organized by the Sabah Foundation at village Sri Serbang Bongawan, Mr. Isamil said handicraft items have so far been used only as decorative pieces which can be gifted to others. But now, with the changing times, there is a need to turn them into consumer products, he said.

For example, he said, craftsmen can think of making laptop bags, mobile covers and pouches using raw materials like mengkuang leaves. He added that craftsmen should apply new ideas to create value-added items for the common consumer.

He even suggested that craftsmen should consider making grand designs that can be applied for interior decoration in luxurious hotels.

Further, citing that the Malaysian handicraft industry is dominated by women, some of whom have even become millionaire entrepreneurs, he said time has come for them to go global.

With proper guidance and motivation, women of today can explore many possibilities and become successful, he concluded.
