For the first time after it banned exports from the Hamas-controlled territory, Israel has relaxed the ban to allow textiles export from the Gaza Strip.
Along the lines of recommendations made by Major General Eitan Dangot, who is also the Coordinator of Government activities in the region, Defence Minister Ehud Barak gave his approval to the decision as a gesture of friendliness during the sacred Muslim month of Ramadan.
Since last few years, Israel had imposed a ban on exports from the Gaza Strip. It has only allowed meagre exports of flowers and strawberries to the Netherlands, adhering to the Dutch Government's request. The ban was further eased during December 2010 to include peppers.
The new guidelines, which became effective from August 2, has opened the doors for the Palestinians to export textile and furniture items to whole of the European and Middle East markets, and also agricultural products to Jordan.
