A programme to impart basic level training in weaving of eri silk yarn has begun at Kokrajhar in Bodoland Territorial Council, Assam.
The 90 day training programme is being sponsored by the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED) under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, and is being implemented by Nedan Foundation, a local NGO.
A total of 50 rural women from the region hailing from below poverty line families are expected to benefit from the training, which is aimed at enhancing the skill, know-how and recognition for hand spun weaving of eri silk. The training will also enhance the communication skills of the trainees.
The indigenous women in the region traditionally inherit the skill of worm rearing, cocoon reeling and eri silk weaving and hence the training is expected to refine their inherent skill and develop it as an alternative source of livelihood, thus enhancing the socio-economic status of these women and their families and as such of society at large.
At the end of 90-day training, TRIFED will be organizing a tribal artisan fair in Kokrajhar in November. Indigenous rural artisans from various parts of Assam and Bodo belt would be encouraged to display their products at the fair.
