Fujia initiates PX plant closure procedures

The Liaoning Province based Fujia Chemical Plant, which has been directed to close down by the Dalian Municipal authorities, has initiated steps to close its paraxylene (PX) plant.

Though the municipal authorities issued directions for immediate closure of the plant, it was not possible to do so owing to the intricacies involved in the production cycle. But the firm has not introduced any new raw inputs in the production line.

The plant is engaged in production of PX, which is a carcinogenic petrochemical that goes into production of raw inputs used in polyester film and fabric manufacturing.

Major concerns have arisen during the last few days with respect to the plant's management, especially its risk control and quality safeguard departments.

Following apprehensions of probable toxic chemical spills, over 10,000 residents of Dalian region carried out a protest calling for relocation of the plant.

The demand for relocating the plant intensified after heavy water tides stirred up by tropical storm 'Muifa' hit north-eastern China's Liaoning Province's coast and broke a watercourse in the Jinshan Industrial Zone in Dalian on August 8 and threatened to strike the Fujia chemical plant just 50 meters away from the dike.

The Fujia plant, which is one of the leading producers of PX in China, commenced operation in 2009 and has an annual capacity of churning out 700,000 tons of PX.
