Samsung Petrochemical, South Korea's largest producer of Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) - a significant raw material for polyester fibres, will begin production at its newly expanded PTA line in September or October.
The debottlenecking of the No. 1 PTA line in Ulsan from 200,000 mt/year to 400,000 mt/year began in October 2010 and was scheduled to be completed by the end of current year.
The expansion being carried out at the cost of Won 60 billion or US$ 56 million would increase the PTA production capacity of the company to 2 million mt/year.
Samsung Petrochemicals has one PTA line at Seosan on the western coast of the country and three PTA lines at its Ulsan complex located on the southern coast. While the Seosan PTA line has the production capacity of 700,000 mt/year, the No. 2 and No.3 lines at the Ulsan complex have each a capacity of 450,000 mt/year.
