Aug '11
A book titled 'Textiles and Dress of Gujarat', which traces the journey of textiles and garments from ancient times to the present day in Gujarat, will be released on September 3 in Ahmedabad.

The book explains how entrepreneurship has led to survival and growth of handmade garment sector in the State. It deals with the State's handmade fabrics and their importance in trade and culture of Gujarat. The history of dyed, woven, painted and printed work of the State textiles is also traced in the book.

The book to be released by Director of Ahmedabad-based National Institute of Design (NID), Mr. Pradyumna Vyas, has been written by Eiluned Edwards, who is a researcher at Victoria and Albert Museum, London and a faculty at the Nottingham Trent University in the UK.

Eiluned Edwards has been doing research on textiles and dresses of India for two decades. She has also extensively worked with entrepreneurs, craftspeople and NGOs in Gujarat, and will be sharing her views at the book release function.

The release of the book is an apt opportunity to celebrate the heritage of Gujarat, said Mr. Vyas. He stressed that the NID has always shown interest in research and documentation of textiles in the State.

He also stated that the Victoria and Albert Museum has an Indian section which projects deep knowledge and understanding about Gujarat's significant role in the glorious history of textile designing in India.
