Workers of powerloom units in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts have gone on an indefinite strike, which entered the third day on Thursday, demanding a 100 percent rise in wages.
The strike by workers demanding a hike in wages on immediate basis, is affecting hundreds of thousands of powerloom units located in Somanur, Kannampalayam, Avinashi, Perumanllur, Vellampalayam, Thekalur, and Palladam, besides Coimbatore and Tirupur cities.
The workers went on strike after the talks for wage revision failed. The talks between workers and powerloom unit owners were held following the end of a three-year agreement on salaries on August 28. The wage revision was last carried out in 2008.
The powerloom units in Coimbatore and in the surrounding areas like Avinashi, Kumarapalayam, Palladam and Somanur produce 12.5 million metres of fabric every day.
Owners of powerloom units are likely to meet on September 3 to discuss their further course of action, followed by the bipartite talks between workers and powerloom owners on September 5.
