Hurricane Irene destroys cotton crop in North Carolina

Cotton and other lucrative crops for this season, along the coast of North Carolina, have been destroyed by hurricane Irene.

Since the State faced severe drought at the start of the season, most of the farmers had delayed their sowing this year, compelling the cultivators to postpone their harvests, according to Brian Long, Representative of the State Department of Agriculture.

As the farmers had not harvested their crops till the hurricane hit the State a few days back, some of them lost all their produce in just a few hours time, Long said.

He added that for some farmers Irene might prove to be the last straw, as such a calamity can wipe away a person's entire year's hard work just before the payday.

Due to high cost of inputs for crop cultivation, some farmers possibly may not have any money for undertaking cultivation during next season, he reasoned.

The crop damage estimates for north-eastern North Carolina's Martin County have already been put at US$ 37 million, but the State authorities expect the figures to mount over the next few days.
