A dyeing factory at Gazipur in Bangladesh has been penalized by the country's Department of Environment (DoE) to the tune of Tk 11 million for releasing untreated chemical effluents into the Turag River and its vicinity.
During a drive, the DoE found the dyeing unit functioning without Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and environment clearance certificate.
In the past six years, the factory is estimated to have released 3.5 cubic metres of untreated chemical wastes in surrounding areas.
In March 2007 too, the DoE had found the unit releasing waste effluents into the environment and was served a notice to stop its operation.
In addition to the imposition of the fine, the DoE requested the Board of Investment to cancel the license of the polluting dyeing factory. It also asked several banks to stop providing loan facility to the factory.
Besides the Gazipur dyeing unit, the DoE also imposed a fine of Tk 10.8 million on three knitting and garment units in Konabari region for polluting environment.
