Maharashtra to increase cotton production through PPP

Maharashtra government will launch a public-private partnership (PPP) initiative to increase cotton production in the State. For the purpose, it will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Jain Irrigation Systems.

The MoU is intended to increase cotton production of small dry-land farmers. This was disclosed at the two-day Agricorp 2011 conference on 'Maharashtra 2015 - Game changers for agricultural growth and farm prosperity' organized by the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

During a series of discussions, the Chamber had recommended that the State government plan new initiatives under a PPP model that includes cooperation of both farmers and the corporates.

Agriculture plays a vital role in Maharashtra's economy. The State has witnessed more than 6 percent average agricultural growth during the last five years, as against the national average growth of 2 percent.

In fiscal 2009-10, Maharashtra's agricultural production recorded Rs. 464.33 billion, which is nearly 8.4 percent of the total agricultural output in India.
