A four-day event is being held in New Delhi to highlight the hardships of tant weavers or “tangali” belonging mainly to the Hooghly and Nadia districts of West Bengal.

Worn as a sari in eastern part of India, tant is the traditional cotton handloom of West Bengal. Its sales have declined during the last two decades due to the increasing popularity of synthetic textiles.

Half of the revenue generated from the event called "Maa Aschen Tant-er Sharee Te” (The Goddess is Coming Draped in Tant) will go to the tangali weavers.

Weaving tips by tangali weavers from Shantipur cluster, a fashion show, and a tant gallery and photography exhibition will be held during the four-day campaign.

The exhibition will depict the history of tant handlooms, its various usages and also the life of a traditional weaver called tanti.

The four-day event will be followed by the creation of a fund to provide better amenities to tant weavers in the Shantipur region of West Bengal.
