Ministry firm on lifting handicraft industry to international level

Sri Lanka's Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Ministry is firm on lifting the country's handicraft industry to international standards, as the handicrafts sector has been prioritized in the Mahinda Chinthana, a ten-year development framework.

Douglas Devananda, the Minister for Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development, said Sri Lanka's traditional industries as well as its profoundly rich culture and heritage have brought worldwide recognition to the country. Hence, the country is under an obligation to conserve and promote these traditional industries, he added.

The Minister further said that his Ministry was undertaking several measures to promote the country's traditional handicraft industries. He emphasized on the significance of evolving innovative designs to earn international recognition for handicraft industry, as it significantly contributes to economic development of rural areas.

Each country has its own diverse designs and technologies that are used in handicraft industries, and hence it becomes necessary for the artisans to make use of the state-of-the-art techniques to upgrade the quality of their goods for penetration in international market, he added.
