Powerloom unit owners who make fabric on job-rate basis have ended their 35-day old strike in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts of Tamil Nadu.
The strike has been called off after an agreement on wage increase was arrived at between the powerloom unit owners and the fabric manufacturers who gave them work on job-rate basis.
The talks between the parties were held in the presence of Tirupur and Coimbatore district collectors. The fabric manufacturers and powerloom unit owners agreed to increase the wage of powerloom workers by 41 percent in Somanur variety of fabric and 39 percent in other varieties of fabrics.
The powerloom workers were on strike demanding 100 percent wage increase from powerloom unit owners working on job-rate basis. The powerloom unit owners were also on strike and had been on a fast in the two districts, which has now been called off.
The new wages would be implemented immediately and the agreed increase would be given to powerloom workers.
Wage agreements between the powerloom unit owners who work on job-rate basis and fabric manufacturers are generally for a three-year agreement, but the latest deal is open to review prior to the completion of the term if the need arises.
