Spanish textile production up, but clothing output declines

The overall production of Spanish textile industry has increased, but the output of clothing industry continued to decline in August 2011. Within the textile and clothing sectors, however, production increased in some sub-sectors, while a decline was witnessed in few other sub-sectors.

The total production of Spanish textile industry grew 8.8 percent year-on-year in August, according to the data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Positive growth was witnessed after a downside in the months of June and July.

The 8.8 percent increase is the highest rise in textile production since June 2010. It has also brought the average change in production during the first eight months of the current year to zero percent. In comparison, the Industrial Production Index (IPI) has witnessed an average rise of 0.6 percent during the January-August period.

Among the various sub-sectors of the textile industry, fabric production went up by 54.5 percent year-on-year, while manufacturing of other textiles increased by 5.7 percent. On the other hand, yarn manufacturing declined by 6.7 percent, while textile finishing saw a reduction in output by 4.1 percent.

The overall clothing output declined 7.5 percent year-on-year in August, which was less compared to the drop of 16.9 percent witnessed in July 2011. Among clothing sub-sectors, a decline of 69.8 percent was observed in production of knitted apparels. The production of articles of fur rose 27 percent year-on-year, while output of garment manufacturing excluding fur and knitted items increased 13.4 percent.
