Reflecting a positive trend, Iran's carpet exports are expected to rise at a year-on-year rate of 12 percent, during the current Iranian calendar year that began on March 21, 2011.
The country's hand-woven carpet exports during the last calendar year stood at US$ 556 million, 12 percent up from previous year. However, in terms of volume, exports grew at a year-on-year rate of around four percent during the period.
Germany and United Arab Emirates were the leading importers of Persian carpets during the period, while Canada, Sweden, Lebanon, Japan, Brazil and Italy followed next.
A rise has also been noted in the volume of carpet exports from East Iranian province of Azarbaijan to China, which grew by six-fold. The province is keen to further enhance its exports to China.
According to experts, China has favourable conditions for importing items like carpets from Azarbaijan. The current rise in Iranian carpet exports to China does not commensurate with the huge demand for Iranian carpets in the vast Chinese market, they add.
Iran is the biggest exporter of hand-woven carpets across the globe, and its Persian rugs remain in great demand for their intricate design and skilful craftsmanship.
