Urbanisation has badly hit the sericulture industry in Karnataka.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Silk Utsav, former Director of the Central Silk Board, TH Somashekar said the industry has suffered a loss of around Rs. 1.02 billion owing to urbanisation.

He informed that owing to urbanisation Karnataka's silk production has come down from 8,000 tons to 2,000 tons. Earlier district areas in and nearby Hoskote, Siddlaghatta and Ramnagar were recognized for their sericulture industry, but now several development projects have made inroads into the developed land there.

He, however, added that sericulture industry in Karnataka cannot die as long as women continue sporting silk saris and people carry high regard for India's effluent tradition of using silk.

The Silk Utsav extends an opportunity to people to know about various kinds of silk and diverse weaving techniques, Mr. Somashekar said and added that weavers and silk producers from all across the country have participated in the fair.

Besides helping the buyers, the fair also intended to further a common platform where the weavers and designers can get in direct touch with customers and other weavers and seek their feedback on present-day designs, latest technology, etc.

In addition to this, the fair also aims to facilitate weavers to better market their goods.
