Bangladesh's Department of Environment (DoE) has fined a textile dyeing unit Tk 3.5 million for releasing untreated liquid wastes into the nearby river and wetland.

A DoE team found the effluent treatment plant (ETP) of the dyeing unit shut and the untreated chemical waste was being released onto nearby wetland through a bypass drain.

The team found the amount of dissolved oxygen in the liquid waste to be much lower than the minimum required level.

The DoE said it had detected release of chemical waste by the same unit several times since 1993. It added that the gas and electricity connections of the unit were cut-off in 2007 for polluting the environment.

In addition to the fine of Tk 3.5 million, the DoE asked the polluting unit to close the bypass line within a day, and also to make the ETP functional within a week's time.
