Wool losing to nylon in New Zealand's carpet trade

Wool is speedily losing its prime position in New Zealand's carpet trade, as other raw materials like solution-dyed nylon carpets are substituting woollen items in retail outlets.

There has been a significant fall in the sale of woollen carpets in recent times, which is being attributed to troubled financial conditions of the world market and swift rise in wool prices over last year.

However, it is not just the price which is working as a decisive factor, as some nylon carpets are equally costly as woollen carpets. Actually, advanced research and innovation in synthetics have led to several advantageous qualities like durability, stain resistance and colours that do not fade away.

Hence, in order to cope with this situation and establish New Zealand as a global innovator in wool processing, some fundamental changes need to be introduced. It is believed that it would take much more to re-establish wool at its earlier position than what all the industry has done so far.

New Zealand has joined a global campaign aimed at reviving the interest in wool furnishings and clothing through promotion of their inherent benefits.
