The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA) introduced five of its innovative machinery products to ITMA, one of the world's most established textile and garment machinery technology exhibitions, in Barcelona, Spain from 22 to 29 September 2011.

They were RFID enabled mobile warehouse management system, wet processing system for knitwear finishing, auto-loader machinery for bra-cup moulding, energy and utility management system and finer nu torque singles ring yarns technology which can be applied to spinning machines easily.

A number of visitors made enquiries about the RFID inventory management system due to its multi-application potential in the industry. As sustainable production is one of the themes of the exhibition this year, visitors were also interested in the auto-loader machinery and relevant energy-saving production technologies for brassiere cups. Video broadcasting of these two projects available at the booth enabled industry players to understand more about their operation and applications.

Dr Hua Tao from Institute of Textiles and Clothing of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University gave a talk to introduce the production and application of the nu Torque singles ring yarns technology on 24 September.

A lot of discussions on the commercialisation of the exhibits were conducted in the fair ground. Most industry counterparts agree that investment on research and technology advancement is important for industry development amid the current economic difficulties.

This year the Research and Education Pavilion was another focus of ITMA, presenting the leading edge of textile technology research from 47 universities and institutes from 20 countries.

HKRITA's representatives also made use of this global exchange platform to visit some world-renowned R&D institutions with excellent research strength, such as the Faculty of Textile Science and Technology of the Shinshu University and College of Textiles of the North Carolina State University. The exchange of ideas helps the institutions learn more about the status and trend of research and development of the textiles industry around the globe.

The ITMA 2011 attracted over 100,000 registered trade visitors from 138 countries and 1,350 exhibitors from 45 countries and economies participated. The exhibition showcased the latest technology and products of the entire textile and garment industry in an exhibition area of over 200,000 square metres.
