Novozymes ramping up its presence in India
Oct '11
Novozymes India is garnering healthy growth in enzymes for the household care, food and beverages industries; making progress within research and development and growing its portfolio of sustainable solutions to various businesses.

Novozymes India began its operations in 1983 with two employees operating from a business center. Since then the Indian operations have grown into an organization spread across three sites in India covering manufacturing, business functions, a shared service center, and Research & Development.

With biotechnology recognized as a sunrise industry in India, Novozymes is planning to further strengthen its position in the country following a twin strategy of enhancing its global portfolio and developing local solutions to gain further foothold in the Indian market.

Growing population fuels the need for sustainable solutions:
According to a report from India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), biotechnology, one of the fastest growing knowledge-based sectors in India, is expected to touch the US$10 billion mark by 2015 on the back of emerging opportunities.

“The potential for industrial biotechnology is strong due to the increasing concern around the environment and climate change issues and the recognition of the need for more sustainable solutions,” explains GS Krishnan, Regional President for Novozymes in India.

Novozymes is the largest supplier of industrial enzymes and microorganisms in India, catering to requirements in the detergent, food, feed, textile, leather, oils & fats, beverage alcohol, and biofuel industries. Novozymes can help companies make more from less as the company's enzymes and microorganisms save energy and raw materials while reducing waste. The result is higher productivity, lower costs, and a better environment.

“Sustainable solutions become important because the middle class population is growing in India. The changing lifestyle and increasing purchasing power is leading to surge in the demand by the new generation of busy urban Indians for quality products in food, detergents and textile industries, fuelling the need to develop environmentally sustainable products,” shares Krishnan.

Advanced biofuels: the next big leap
Rising environment concerns has led the Indian government to introduce comprehensive initiatives, especially in the field of energy conversion and introduction of alternate fuels.

The Bloomberg New Energy Finance study "Next-generation Ethanol: What's in it for India” commissioned by Novozymes and presented under the aegis of Danish Embassy in India in cooperation with Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in May 2011, states that transforming agricultural residues into biofuel could create up to one million jobs in India over the next decade, while radically improving its energy efficiency by supplementing its transport gasoline demand through greener fuels by 2020.

This clearly signifies opportunities for Novozymes in the field of biofuels. Novozymes is already working with its local partners Praj Industries for the development of advanced biofuels.
