Gujarat cotton growers expecting better returns

Cotton growers in the western State of Gujarat are elated at the prospect of better returns this year owing to bumper harvest this season coupled with good quality of the crop.

Cotton traders in the State, which accounts for nearly one-third of the total cotton produce in India, say the quality of cotton harvested this year is better than last year's and hence, farmers are expecting to earn higher prices for their produce.

However, traders and brokers are expecting the prices to decline after mid-November due to higher arrivals.

The harvested crop has just begun to arrive in the market and is expected to pick up only by mid-November. So far, 27,000-30,000 bales (1 bale = 170 kg) of cotton have arrived in Gujarat compared to arrival of 80,000-90,000 bales in the rest of the country.

Until a few years ago, farmers in the State received Rs. 400-600 for a maund (1 maund = 20 kg) of cotton, but due to a rise in demand the price has gone up to nearly Rs. 1,000 a maund.

On Friday, the price of Sankar-6 variety was in the range of 39,000-39,500 a candy (1 candy = 356 kg).
