Jetis batik, an indigenous textile handicraft belonging to Sidoarjo regency bordering the city of Surabaya in East Java, will be promoted globally.

Eighteen future Indonesian ambassadors visited Sidoarjo to understand the potential of local handicrafts industry as a part of a series of visits undertaken before they are sworn in as ambassadors.

The visit of future ambassadors to countries like Denmark, Algeria, Malaysia, Venezuela, Bosnia, France, Qatar and Mozambique to Sidoarjo was in the context of promotion of local handicrafts in the countries of their deputation.

Sidoarjo is well-known for its batik and leather handicrafts. Earlier, the regency used to sell Jetis batik in the island of Madura, off the northeastern coast of Java. However, the sales of Jetis batik have declined since the 1990s.

During the visit, Sidoarjo Regent Saiful Ilah welcomed the decision to promote Sidoarjo's Jetis batik in the international market.
