“Focus on adding value rather than volume”- Amit, Jindal Group

The Jindal Group currently has a denim capacity of 30 million meters per annum, 10 million meters of weaving and processing bottom weight fabrics, 5 million meters of yarn dyed shirting, 10 million meters printed shirting, and with the rest accounted for by home textiles. Today, Jindal exports to most of the developed economies of the west.

Future plans include backward integrating further by setting up a 15,000 spindles spinning unit, which will be gradually ramped up. Their technologies are on par with the best in India and have automated 80 percent of their operations, to reduce human error and dependency.

After completing his graduation, Amit entered the portals of the business in 1999 and has mainly been mentored by his father. His uncles too have contributed in no less measure and have taught him all about production of fabrics, which is where his first initiation began. He also gives due credit to the overall in-charge of the group - Mr Dinesh Shah.

In 2003, Amit was given responsibility of setting up and managing the weaving plant and is currently taking care of all the other businesses other than home textiles. The Group expects to clock a turnover of Rs 5 billion in the current fiscal year and hopes to post revenues of an ambitious Rs 10 billion in the next 3-4 years, a major portion of which will be borne by Amit's young shoulders.

Amit visited the recently concluded ITMA-2011 and was fascinated by the latest machinery and technology on display at the various stalls. Amit is of the opinion that you have to be efficient in whatever you do, whether it is cost, production or operations for which one needs to have the latest technology.

He feels that one of the challenges is getting very good talented employees. He feels efforts should be put across by everybody in the industry to attract the right talent to the textile sector. To mitigate the shortage, Jindal conducts regular induction training programs for its employees.

Since his parents are doctors, the Jindal family is closely involved in hosting blood donation and medical camps. Apart from which, his family donates generously to educational institutions and towards helping the poor.

Amit's mantra for success – Keep going when the going gets tough, be honest to yourself and finally do not loose faith and hope as there is always a light at the end of the tunnel.

His advice to other second and third generation textile leaders – “Adapt the latest technologies as we are far behind developed countries. Get into textiles other than traditional textiles. Focus on quality and adding value to whatever you do rather than concentrating on volumes”.
