Japan's import volume of naphtha – a key petrochemical used as a raw material for production of ethylene that is used in the production of textiles – fell 17 percent year-on-year in October 2011, as per Government data.
Japan imported 1,885,418 kilolitres (1,290,983 tons) of naphtha for ethylene production in October 2011, compared to 2,260,294 kl (1,563,280 tons) in the same month last year, as per the data released by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
The naphtha import was, however, more in October compared to 1,555,850 kl (1,063,293 tons) in September 2011. Accordingly, the value of imports in October also increased to US$ 1.237 billion from US$ 1.027 billion in the previous month.
The import price of naphtha was US$ 701.3/ton (40,459 yen/kl) in October 2010. This increased to US$ 966/ton (50,804 yen/kl) and US$ 958.7/ton (50,349 yen/kl) in September and October 2011 respectively.
